Mortar Matters

When restoring a historical structure, it is important for the mortar being used in the restoration to be both visually and physically appropriate for the building.

Visually, it must blend with the building’s existing mortar — on a good restoration job, most people cannot visibly distinguish between the original mortar and the properly matched mortar used in the restoration process.

Physically, the wrong mortar mix can actually damage the building. For example, a mortar mix that is too strong or vapor impermeable may cause long-term damage to individual bricks and to the structure as a whole.

For properties with special historical significance, a proper analysis by a qualified laboratory identifies the mortar’s original ingredients and ensures the best possible mortar match.

FHRR relies on visual inspection, laboratory analysis, and experience to ensure history is preserved properly, both physically and visually.
